Located just 45 kilometers (50 minutes drive) from Sawai Madhopur, the National Chambal Sanctuary is one of India's cleanest and most peaceful aquatic reserves. Unlike the dusty jungle tracks of Ranthambore, Chambal offers a soothing boat cruise through azure waters and towering mud ravines.
The sanctuary was created specifically to protect the critically endangered Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), a prehistoric fish-eating crocodilian with distinct long, slender jaws. The river is also home to thriving populations of Mugger Crocodiles (Marsh Crocodiles), Indian Softshell Turtles, and countless aquatic species.
Over 2,000 Gharials thrive along the sandy riverbanks. You will observe them sunbathing just a few meters from your motorboat with 99% sighting certainty.
Alongside Gharials, the Chambal riverbanks are home to large Mugger crocodiles and rare Indian softshell turtles basking under the warm morning sun.
A paradise for bird photographers. Spot Indian Skimmers slicing through water with lower beaks, Black-bellied Terns, Sarus Cranes, and Bar-headed Geese.
